I started with BS setting it up using /u/brulosopher's videos on youtube. I suppose if I got more accurate numbers I would leave kettle trub out. Also another quote thats relevant Milk stouts might contain some small percentage of lactose (milk sugar) but not necessarily. ![]() Maize extract, lactose, caramel and hops round off the perfect formula for a smooth, flavourful stout. I don't have any losses from chiller or kettle trub, because I use an immersion chiller, and since I always seem to be short on wort, I drain all of it into my fermenter. Barley malt is the basis, with roasted malt adding the darker taste notes. It feels like all of the accumulated settings in BS end up with a target, and because my result never seems to match, I don't know what was off, or more importantly, what was indeed correct in terms of my settings on BS. Maybe even the first part of all this is: I'm not sure what baseline to establish between the software's precision, and the variables that I can hone in on over time. but it feels hard to measure things like grain absorption, especially on a brew day. My mash efficiency now usually sits around 77%-78%. Sometimes I get a little bit extra depending on the grains in my bill. I accordingly changed my constant in BeerSmith to 0.46238 and am now spot-on after some gentle squeezing of the bag while it sits in a colander.
